Military Recruitment and the Solomon Amendment
Solomon Amendment and Student Information
The Solomon Amendment (10 U.S.C. § 983) is a federal law allowing military recruiters to access certain Personally Identifiable Information (PII) from students' education records, for those aged 17 and older. The Department of Education has determined that the Solomon Amendment supersedes most FERPA elements. Therefore, TSU must release data upon a military recruiter's request. The information that may be released includes:
- Name
- Address
- Telephone
- Year of birth
- Level of education
- Academic major
- Degrees received
- Educational institution most recently enrolled
Under the Solomon Amendment, information is released solely for military recruitment purposes. Military recruiters can request student recruitment information once each term or semester for each of the 12 eligible units within the five branches of service:
- Army, Army Reserve, Army National Guard
- Navy, Navy Reserve
- Marine Corps, Marine Corps Reserve
- Air Force, Air Force Reserve, Air Force National Guard
- Coast Guard, Coast Guard Reserve
If a student has submitted a Request to Withhold Directory Information through the Office of Student Records, no information from their education record will be released as specified in the Solomon Amendment.
